When Cohost was shutting down, I decided it was a shame that I'd never really utilized it all that much and decided to post videos of a bunch of old 90s screensavers from the After Dark collection. For the longest time, I never really made those videos viewable anywhere else, but now that I finally got this blog up and running, it seemed like the right time to post them here and talk about them. Oddly enough, I don't think these modules are all that well documented anywhere else on the web.
I don't know why, but I really loved these things back in the day (and still do) and could spend hours just messing with them. The semi-interactive, randomness of the displays were just so odd and visually stimulating. Just my kinda thing. So each one of these entries is going to have an embedded YouTube video of a different screensaver, some random musings about it from me, and some actually information about the screen saver module from the original software itself. Keep in mind that the videos might not show everything a particular screen saver contains. As they are random, it would be impossible to show everything in every module in the span of a five minute video. But hopefully it gives you an idea of what they were about.
The After Dark collection was published by Berkley Systems and had a ton of versions and expansions. Some of those expansions were based on popular IP like The Simpsons, Looney Toons, and Star Trek.
Of course we have to start with Flying Toasters. If you know anything about these particular screen savers, it's certainly the Flying Toasters which became the de-facto mascot of the After Dark brand.
